The article by Arpy Manusyan, Mariam Khalatyan, Nvard Margaryan, and Armine Ishkanian analyzes the global civil society response to the war in Nagorno Karabakh, which erupted on September 27, 2020, following Azerbaijan’s military strike. It highlights the lack of attention and action from international NGOs and media despite significant suffering and humanitarian crises in the region. The authors also express frustration with the prevalent “both-sides” rhetoric, the lack of human rights language in the statements on human rights violations and the silence of potential allies. Additionally, they critiques the failures of previous peace-building initiatives and question the effectiveness of global civil society’s approach to resolving the conflict. Ultimately, they argue that a genuine path to peace must be grounded in democracy, human rights, and justice.
